Four Blue Ridge Cancer Care Physicians Honored with Best Bedside Manner Award

Our Health magazine recognizes Virginia physicians for commitment to providing stellar patient care

Roanoke, Va. (Jan. 10, 2012)– Today, Blue Ridge Cancer Care(BRCC), an18-physician privately-owned practice specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and blood disorders and an affiliate of The US Oncology Network, announced that four of its physicians were honored with Our Healthmagazine’s Best Bedside Manner Award.

Drs. William Finteland Harry McCoy, IIIplaced 1st in the Hematology/Oncology division, and Drs. John Rogersand Karanita Ojomoplaced 1st in the magazine’s Radiology Oncology division.

“A cancer diagnosis is difficult for anyone,” said Dr. Ojomo. “However, knowing I am on their team fighting and praying with them is a comfort every patient should have.”

This year, more than 27,000 patients voted on Our Health’s website for physicians and non-physician providers specializing in more than 50 specialties. Voters were driven to the website, www.ourhealthvirginia.com, through social media, print advertising and television commercials that aired on WDBJ7.

“It is humbling to be recognized individually, but I think it also reflects patients’ recognition of the efforts of everyone in our department,” said Dr. Rogers. “There is plenty to worry about when a patient has a new cancer diagnosis, so we all work hard to lessen each patient’s anxiety when he/she comes in for treatments.”

Each of the physicians honored with the 5th Annual Best Bedside Manner Award will be featured in the magazine’s January issue, which is humbling for the four BRCC physicians. These four honorees as well as all of the staff at BRCC have a commitment to treat patients with high quality care both physically and emotionally.

“Taking care of any human being in need remains a sacred trust,” said Dr. Fintel. “We are all children of God and deserve to be treated like one of the family.”

“I have a simple philosophy about caring for people,” said Dr. McCoy. “I treat them how I would want my wife, children or parents treated."

Throughout the years, Blue Ridge Cancer Care has developed a model for care that maximizes patient and family convenience, providing a strong emphasis on ensuring patients and caregivers receive the physical and emotional support that they need. Working as an independent practice allows these physicians the freedom to tailor care to each patient's unique diagnosis.
