Dr. Gerald Schertz is a native of Bloomington, Illinois. He graduated from Michigan State University with high honors, received his M.D. with honors from the University of Chicago, and completed a residency at Yale University. Dr. Schertz continued at Yale with a fellowship in medical oncology. He is board certified with the National Board of Medical Examiners, American Board of Internal Medicine, and American Board of Medicine Specialty Examination in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine. Dr. Schertz has a teaching appointment with the University of Virginia which he has held since 1977. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Virginia. Dr. Schertz served on the Roanoke board of the American Cancer Society from 1978-1998 and was president of the Virginia Division of the American Cancer Society for five years.

Dr. Schertz and his wife are currently residing in Troutville, Virginia. He has two grown children and two grandchildren. He has a love of nature and enjoys gardening, horticulture, fishing, and raising swans.
