'Mammograms every 2 years, not annually,' suggest scientists
2/04/2014
In 2009, the US Preventive Services Task Force created guidelines recommending biennial mammography screening for women between the ages of 50 and 74. And now, scientists suggest that following this guideline would be equally effective and save the US health care system $4.3 billion a year. The researchers, led by Dr. Laura J.
WHO: cancer growing at 'alarming pace'
2/04/2014
A new report from the World Health Organization's cancer agency reveals that cancer rates are growing at an "alarming pace" around the world and urges stronger efforts on prevention measures to curb the disease.
Eisai's Phase III lenvatinib Study 303 for improvement in refractory differentiated thyroid cancer
2/04/2014
Eisai has announced that the Phase III SELECT trial (Study 303) of lenvatinib, an investigational selective tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) with a novel binding mode,[1] met its primary endpoint. Compared to placebo, lenvatinib showed a highly statistically significant improvement in progression free survival (PFS) in patients with radioiodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer (RR-DTC).
Researchers advance findings on key gene related to cancer metastasis
2/04/2014
New evidence reported by researchers at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) lends support to the hypothesis that the SSeCKS/AKAP12 gene is a key inhibitor of prostate cancer metastasis.
World Cancer Day: Half don't know about link between diet and cancer
2/04/2014
Around half of Britons don't recognise the importance of diet in protecting against cancer, demonstrating that many of the myths about the disease are still widely believed. The YouGov poll commissioned by World Cancer Research Fund for World Cancer Day found that 49 per cent do not know that diet affects people's risk of getting cancer.

Protocol developed to harvest mouse cell lines for melanoma research
2/04/2014
Dartmouth researchers have developed a protocol that permits cells harvested from melanoma tumors in mice to grow readily in cell culture. Their findings were published in an article, Multiple murine BRafV600E melanoma cell lines with sensitivity to PLX4032, in the journal Pigment Cell & Melanoma Research.
Immune cells undergo 'spontaneous' changes on a daily basis that could lead to cancers if not for the diligent surveillance of our immune system, Melbourne scientists have found.
Stem cell signal linked with cancer growth
2/04/2014
Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have identified a protein critical to hematopoietic stem cell function and blood formation. The finding has potential as a new target for treating leukemia because cancer stem cells rely upon the same protein to regulate and sustain their growth.Hematopoietic stem cells give rise to all other blood cells.
Factors produced in inflammatory cells may reawaken dormant prostate cancer cells
2/04/2014
Researchers in the Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute discovered in pre-clinical models that dormant prostate cancer cells found in bone tissue can be reawakened, causing metastasis to other parts of the body. Understanding this mechanism of action may allow researchers to intervene prior to disease progression.
