Support Groups at Blue Ridge Cancer Care

Blue Ridge Cancer Care offers professionally facilitated support groups across the Roanoke region and the New River Valley/Salem region to provide connection, emotional support, and shared understanding for individuals affected by cancer. In the Roanoke region, support groups are facilitated by a social work counselor and offer space for emotional support, reflection, processing, and psychoeducation related to coping with cancer and psychosocial adjustment. In the New River Valley/Salem region, support groups are facilitated by a social worker and focus on connection, education, and supportive discussion within a compassionate and patient-centered environment.

Across regions, groups are designed to support individuals at different points along the cancer continuum, including diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, advanced illness, and cancer-related loss. All groups emphasize respect, choice, and psychological safety. Participants are welcome to engage at their own comfort level, and there is no expectation to share.

Coming soon: In the Roanoke region, a quarterly Cancer Survivorship Support Group will be offered for individuals navigating life after active treatment as well as those living with cancer long-term. Survivorship is understood broadly and may include people who are in remission, managing chronic or metastatic disease, or continuing treatment without the expectation of cure. This group will focus on adjustment, identity shifts, ongoing physical and emotional concerns, and finding meaning and connection across diverse survivorship experiences.

Online participation options are coming soon to expand access and flexibility.

General Cancer Support Group

Facilitated by Tim Collie, LCSW

The General Cancer Support Group is a counselor-facilitated group for individuals impacted by cancer, regardless of diagnosis, stage, or treatment status. This group is intended for patients who are newly diagnosed, currently in treatment, in survivorship, or living with advanced cancer and who are seeking ongoing emotional support and connection with others who understand the experience of cancer.

Group conversations may include coping with treatment, changes in daily life, uncertainty, emotional responses, and navigating relationships and support systems. Participants may share as much or as little as they wish, and listening is always an option. The group is structured to encourage reflection, mutual support, and shared understanding in a respectful and supportive setting.

The General Cancer Support Group meets on the third Tuesday of each month from 2:00–3:00 PM and is held in the second-floor conference room at 2013 S Jefferson St, Roanoke, VA 24014.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more about ways to join the group, please contact Eric Crocker at eric.crocker@usoncology.com or 540-240-3689.

Living With Loss (Cancer-Related Grief Support Group)

Facilitated by Tim Collie, LCSW

The Living With Loss (Cancer-Related Grief Support Group) is a counselor-facilitated group for individuals experiencing grief and loss connected to cancer. This group recognizes that grief related to cancer may involve many forms of loss, including changes in health, identity, roles, independence, relationships, future plans, or the loss of a loved one.

This group offers a space to acknowledge and explore grief experiences that may not always be visible or easily named. The focus is on validation, meaning-making, and support around ongoing or evolving losses associated with cancer. Participants are welcome to engage at their own pace, with no expectation to speak or share.

The Living With Loss (Cancer-Related Grief Support Group) will begin on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, and will continue the third Wednesday of each month thereafter. Meetings will be held from 2:00–3:00 PM in the second-floor conference room at 2013 S Jefferson St, Roanoke, VA 24014.
