Biography

Dr. Sheenu Sheela is a board-certified hematologist and oncologist dedicated to providing compassionate, patient-centered cancer care close to home. She cares for patients with a wide range of cancers and blood disorders, with particular clinical interests in breast cancer, lung cancer, and both benign and malignant hematologic conditions. Dr. Sheela also performs bone marrow biopsies and is committed to bringing innovative treatments and clinical research opportunities to the communities she serves.

Dr. Sheela earned her medical degree from Government Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. She completed her residency training at MedStar Harbor Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where she served as Chief Resident, and went on to complete a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Levine Cancer Institute/Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology through the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Prior to joining Blue Ridge Cancer Care, Dr. Sheela served as an Academic Hospitalist at MedStar Franklin Square Hospital Center and conducted research within the Myeloid Malignancies Section of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health. She later practiced as a Hematology-Oncology Attending Physician at Levine Cancer Institute/Atrium Health, where she further developed her expertise in cancer and blood disorder care. 

Driven by a passion for community oncology, Dr. Sheela believes that high-quality cancer care should be accessible close to home. She is committed to treating every patient with the same compassion, respect, and dedication she would want for her own family. Her approach focuses on caring for the whole person, helping patients and their loved ones navigate the emotional, medical, and practical challenges of cancer while serving as a trusted advocate throughout their treatment journey. 

Dr. Sheela is actively involved in clinical research as a Principal Investigator and Sub-Investigator for cancer clinical trials and works to expand patient access to innovative therapies within the community setting. Her professional achievements include receiving the Outstanding Fellow Award from the North Carolina Oncology Association and the Lung Cancer Initiative Research Fellows Grant. She is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and maintains memberships in the American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Sheela enjoys hiking, traveling, and spending time with her family.
