Blue Ridge Cancer Care Adds Medical Oncologist to Roanoke Facility to Meet Growing Demand for Advanced Cancer Care Services

Dr. Jennifer Vaughn brings expertise in research and academic oncology to BRCC

Roanoke, Virginia (January 13, 2015) – There is good news for patients in the Roanoke area battling cancer today, as well as those who may face the disease in the future. Blue Ridge Cancer Care (BRCC), the leading cancer care provider serving Southwest Virginia for more than 35 years and an affiliate of The US Oncology Network, has added another medical oncologist to its practice to enhance service to patients throughout the Roanoke region. Jennifer Vaughn, M.D., joined BRCC in early October and is now seeing patients at the Roanoke facility. Dr. Vaughn is the second medical oncologist BRCC has added in the past two months to meet the growing need for advanced cancer care services in the Roanoke area.

“The demand for our services in Roanoke has greatly increased,” said William A. Fintel, M.D., medical oncologist at BRCC. “We are committed to seeing patients as quickly as possible, especially those who are newly diagnosed, to help them through this extremely difficult time. With the addition of Dr. Vaughn, our Roanoke facility will have seven medical oncologists to ensure that we see new patients as soon as possible and to provide the highest level of patient-centered, integrated care to all of our patients in a timely fashion.”
Blue Ridge Cancer Care is a multidisciplinary privately-owned practice specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and blood disorders. The practice provides comprehensive integrated care, including cutting-edge clinical trials through its affiliation with The US Oncology Network and US Oncology Research. With the addition of Dr. Vaughn, the practice has 19 cancer physicians serving patients in nine locations throughout Southwest Virginia.

“Dr. Vaughn is a highly qualified, compassionate oncologist trained in the very latest treatment options, having completed her Hematology-Oncology fellowship and Internal Medicine training at the University of Washington in Seattle,” said Dr. Fintel. “She joins her husband in elevating the field of medical research in Southwest Virginia, as he is an immunologist with Carilion Research Institute. Dr. Vaughn will practice medicine with our group,” he continued, “but also have a joint appointment with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Her skills as a physician will be partnered with her passion for clinical research, bringing an added commitment to research to our practice, as well to Carilion Clinic.”

Dr. Vaughn has strong ties to the Southeast, having received her medical degree from Emory University’s School of Medicine in Atlanta, Ga., as well as a Master’s of Science in Public Health from Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health.
“Joining Blue Ridge Cancer Care allows me to provide the very latest treatment options to my patients,” said Dr. Vaughn. “The practice has resources typically found only in major academic medical centers and large hospital systems, so it is exciting to have these advanced treatments available to patients in a convenient community setting where they have the support of family and friends. I am also looking forward to becoming very involved in BRCC’s research program, as they have one of the largest and most active clinical research programs in Southwest Virginia.”
